Here are just a few of the things you can do at home to support healthy gut flora:
#1 Eat a fiber rich diet
Make sure to eat plenty of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Think a 5 – 10 servings each day.
#2 Avoid Processed Foods and Fast Foods
Processed, pre-made, and prepackaged foods are full of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. These chemicals are really hard on our gut flora and will negatively impact them.
There isn’t a single item on a fast food menu that doesn’t have some chemical ingredient. From dough conditions in the bun to mystery goo in your patty and pesticide laden french fries, it’s best just to avoid fast food all together.
#3 Eat Cultured Foods
Cultured foods are rich in probiotics. Homemade kefir is a probiotic powerhouse and can contain anywhere from 30 – 55 different strains of probiotics. You can use dairy or non-dairy milk to make homemade kefir. Click here to see my first kefir experiment and my kefir with a second ferment on my Facebook page.
In addition, cultured veggies like sauerkraut and kimchee are also rich in probiotics.
#4 Take Probiotics Daily
There are some great over the counter brands of probiotics. I like Garden of Life, iFlora, Jarrow and Orthobiotic. When purchasing a probiotic for a child ages 2 and up, you want to look for a multi-strain probiotic with a minimum of 25 billion Colony Forming Units (CFU). If your child is under age 2, please seek the advice a licensed acupuncturist or natural health care provider. Click Here to learn how to pick the BEST probiotics.
