A Plan for COVID-19: Tools for Preventing & Minimizing the Risk of Getting a Serious Case
by Robin Ray Green, L.Ac., MTCM
It's very probable that we'll see a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases as we emerge back into the world and start to interact with others again.
I want to help parents and kids do this safely.
If you're worried about what's going to happen when we're back to our new normal then read on because will be very helpful!
There are a few things I want you to know about COVID-19 that I think are really important so pardon this super long email and please read to the bottom about an important sign you need to monitor if your child does get it.
How is COVID-19 Affecting Children?
The data is just beginning to come in with regard to how children are being affected by and recovering from COVID-19.
Overall the news is good.
Most children are able to fight the coronavirus and make a full recovery without requiring hospitalization. The CDC is reporting that between .58% to 2% of children are admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
Early reports also indicate that children with asthma are not having exacerbations that put them in the hospital any more than children without asthma. We won't know more until there's more data.
Moving forward, we need to have a plan for how we're going to prevent and treat illness to protect our lungs and minimize the risk of having a severe case of COVID-19.
Germs Aren't the Enemy, Your Immune System's the Hero
So much of the conversation around COVID-19 views germs as the enemy that we're at war with. We must KILL germs to survive.
This line of thinking breeds germaphobia and can create so much anxiety around germs that it can be hard to function.
Chinese medicine theory has a whole new (or old) take on germs, the immune system, and how we get sick.
In this video, I explain a simple shift in perspective that helps us re-enter the world without being fearful of germs.
Make Sure Your Immune System is Strong & Protect Your Lungs
In addition to the standard recommendations for staying healthy, make sure that you're getting good quality sleep, adequate exercise, and outdoor time.
Drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated.
Cut out excess sugar.
Sugar can decrease our white blood cell's ability to fight infection by up to 50%!
Make sure you're getting adequate vitamin D, vitamin C, and other antioxidants, especially glutathione.
Glutathione is your master antioxidant, helps with detoxification, and has a protective effect on the lungs!
In this article, I share a special technique that initiates your body's own production of glutathione. And it's great for kids that can't or won't take supplements.
Do Daily Acupressure on Two Powerful Acupoints for Boosting Immunity
These acupoints can also help with recovery from COVID-19 or any respiratory illness. You can combine acupressure with the technique for boosting glutathione into one succinct daily treatment.
Manage Anxiety with Acupressure & AcuPatching
There has been quite a bit of research done on acupressure for anxiety and the results are pretty clear that for many people acupressure is an effective tool to help reduce anxiety and nervousness without drugs.
Even in the moment, when they're anxious.
It doesn't matter if your child has generalized anxiety, social anxiety, or panic attacks.
Daily acupressure or AcuPatching™ can help manage feelings of anxiety by changing our physiological response to our thoughts and feelings.
Sometimes this happens within minutes of stimulating the points below.
This is especially important right now because stress and anxiety cause an increase in cortisol which in turn causes a decrease in our immune function.
Acupoint stimulation is a tool you can use instantly and even small children can learn to do it.
In this blog post and video, I'll show you two ways to treat the acupoints and help reduce your child's anxiety.
If Your Child Gets Sick, Have a Plan for Treating Symptoms
Unfortunately, there is no known cure, holistic or otherwise, for COVID-19.
However, there are many holistic ways to address symptoms, reduce the duration of illness, and minimize our risk for getting a severe case of it.
Address Symptoms with Herbs & Acupressure
I'm working on a series of videos to teach you how to manage the symptoms of COVID-19 with acupressure. I'll be releasing them over the coming weeks.
Here are some strategies you can use now.
At the first sign of illness, I recommend giving your child the pediatric herbal formula Throat Soothe.
The earlier you start the better. So, I'd give this even if you're not sure you're child is sick as there's no harm in taking it if they don't get sick.
This formula is based on the Chinese remedy Yin Qiao San. It is traditionally used for sore throat, swollen tonsils, runny nose, fever, and chills.
Then select formulas to treat symptoms as the pattern of illness changes.
For cough and breathing issues, use Chest Release which is based on a formula called Qing Qi Hua Tan Tang.
It is traditionally used to resolve symptoms of productive cough with phlegm (esp. yellow phlegm), fever, thirst, restlessness, and disturbed sleep. I have more tips for treating cough and breathing issues here.
For abdominal pain and bloating, use Tummy Soothe combined with Throat soothe.
This formula is based on Bao He Wan and is traditionally used for "food accumulation" that causes abdominal pain, distention or painful bloating, and constipation. Do not use this formula for diarrhea or loose stools.
For Fever, in addition to Throat Soothe, use can use acupressure points to reduce a fever without using drugs.

If Sick, Start Monitoring Your Child's Oxygen Levels Daily
Day 5-6 seems to be a critical period for determining how COVID-19 progresses.
If COVID-19 affects the lungs, many people are experiencing a drop in their oxygen levels around the fifth or sixth day after their symptoms begin.
However, there may not be any breathing difficulties which would normally cause parents to take their child to urgent care.
The only way to know for sure if oxygen levels are too low is to monitor them with a pulse oximeter.
You can use a finger pulse oximeter, which is available at most drugstores, to measure your child's oxygen saturation levels or how much oxygen they have in their blood.
If their oxygen levels drop below 95% while awake, below 93% while sleeping, or they're showing any signs of difficulty breathing, call your doctor immediately.
Your child may need oxygen therapy administered at the hospital.
Why is this important?
Early intervention with oxygen therapy may be KEY to preventing worsening lung symptoms, like pneumonia or sepsis, that could land your child into intensive care.
Remember, your child may say they feel fine, show no signs of breathing issues, yet have low oxygen levels. If low oxygen levels persist for days before getting oxygen therapy it may lead to a worse prognosis.
Monitor them daily and call your doctor if they're oxygen levels are below normal!
There's only so much we can do to prevent illness, but with the right plan, you can navigate and survive COVID-19 safely!
