5 Ways to Keep Your Gut Flora Healthy

Here are just a few of the things you can do at home to support healthy gut flora:

#1 Eat a fiber rich diet

Make sure to eat plenty of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Think a 5 - 10 servings each day.

#2 Avoid Processed Foods and Fast Foods

Processed, pre-made, and prepackaged foods are full of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. These chemicals are really hard on our gut flora and will negatively impact them. There isn't a single item on a fast food menu that doesn't have some chemical ingredient. From dough conditions in the bun to mystery goo in your patty and pesticide-laden french fries, it's best just to avoid fast food all together.

#3 Eat Cultured Foods

Cultured foods are rich in probiotics. Homemade kefir is a probiotic powerhouse and can contain anywhere from 30 - 55 different strains of probiotics. You can use dairy or non-dairy milk to make homemade kefir. Click here to see my first kefir experiment and my kefir with a second ferment on my Facebook page. In addition, cultured veggies like sauerkraut and kimchee are also rich in probiotics.

#4 Take Probiotics Daily

There are some great over the counter brands of probiotics. I like Garden of Life, iFlora, Jarrow and Orthobiotic. When purchasing a probiotic for a child ages 2 and up, you want to look for a multi-strain probiotic with a minimum of 25 billion Colony Forming Units (CFU). If your child is under age 2, please seek the advice a licensed acupuncturist or natural health care provider. Click Here to learn how to pick the BEST probiotics.

#5 Chinese Wellness Massage Daily

The Chinese Wellness Massage helps to support the Earth and Metal Elements and thus healthy digestion and immunity. Get the free video and massage guide here.
